Motor Insurance Group

Only 32 per cent of us have switched car insurance in the last year, so that’s 68 per cent of the UK still not taking advantage of the internet to research products like motor insurance to find a cheaper policy.

Non-switchers regard the features and type of policy cover more important than people who switch insurers.

1 in 10 insurers have never switched or have been with the same car insurance company for more than 10 years.

The UK’s motorists are way behind when it comes to switching insurance online. This is quite surprising when you think about the numbers of people switching credit card providers or utility and telecoms providers. So why aren’t we all saving ourselves a few hundred quid a year by shopping around for car insurance too?

A whopping 43% of people say they have stayed with their current provider for three years or longer, while 7% of these claim they have never changed their car insurance provider.

For 71% of people who have switched their car insurance within the last 12 months, price is the key factor when choosing their insurance provider. While motorists who have been loyal to their insurance provider for over three years don’t rate price as highly. Instead, only 56% of people who last switched their car insurer three to four years ago named price as the most important factor. This figure drops to just 24% for people who have been with their current car insurance provider for over 10 years.

In contrast to that, 44% of this group values the level of cover (e.g. third party, fully comprehensive) provided by their insurance company as the most important factor when choosing their car insurance policy.

One thing I don’t understand is ‘level of cover provided’ – surely Third Party insurance cover is the same no matter where you buy it? i.e. you’re insured if (God forbid) you crash your car into someone else’s. As far as I understand it this is the least or cheapest kind of insurance you can buy in order to legally drive your car on public roads. Fully Comprehensive insurance cover means you can claim for things like scraping the car wing on a gate post or accidentally reversing into a lamppost etc…You can claim on your insurance to cover the cost of these repairs.

I suppose it’s the insurance companies themselves who are ‘tailoring’ insurance policies by adding additional features and benefits to a ‘normal’ insurance policy in order to attract new customers. This is where the whole ‘getting the right cover for your individual needs, rather than getting the cheapest price’ stems from in the first place.

If insurance companies just provided the basic level of insurance needed to drive legally then I’m sure car insurance would be a whole lot cheaper for everyone anyway…

Cheap Motor Insurance
will Insurance goes up when I change my car motor?

i am trying to buy a car.
but some cars are cheap when they changed out their motors.
how much will the insurance go up if the motor is changed.
and how much will the insurance go up if the car is modified?

the insurance company only goes by the cars serial numbers as that gives them all the information they need about the car, when you install a larger motor they don’t know that.

Motor Insurance Ireland

The Supreme Court has warned people who choose to travel as a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone who they are aware, or are reasonably aware has consumed alcohol, that they could themselves be partially liable to for any injuries that occur should an accident take place.

Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns said that any tolerance towards intoxicated drivers and their passengers ‘is very much a thing of the past.’

The judge said that if a passenger had realised or should have realised the risks being undertaken by travelling with a drunk driver, the greater degree of contributory negligence they should take. However, Mr Justice Kearns did say that cases of contributory negligence should be approached objectively and be taken on the individual circumstances of each accident and car insurancecover.

The understanding of the role alcohol has in road accidents changed dramatically over the last 40 years, largely thanks to the work of anti-drink-driving societies and campaigns and the continued rise in the number of deaths on the roads.

Mr Justice Kearns gave the Supreme Court judgement when upholding a High Court finding that a young business student, Cynthia Hussey, was found to be 40 per cent liable for injuries sustained in a 1999 accident whilst travelling as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a friend’s boyfriend who had been drinking. Because of this, the High Court had reduced Ms Hussey’s award of €83,000 by 40 per cent, leaving her with damages worth €50,000.

Despite an appeal from Ms Hussey, the three-judge court dismissed it, with Mr Justice Kearns saying the award was still ‘generous’ in light of the ample evidence presented to them.

Ms Hussey had originally sued the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland for back injuries she had allegedly received during the smash and the owner of the car, her friend and her friend’s then boyfriend, the driver of the car the night of the accident.

The Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland was joined to the case due to the driver not being insured to drive the car. The defendants admitted liability but alleged contributory negligence by Ms Hussey for allowing herself to become a passenger in a car she knew or should have known was being driven by an intoxicated person, as she had be drinking that night with the driver.

Motor Insurance Quotes

If you are looking to get the best motor insurance quotes then there are a number of things that you will need to take into account. Different factors will affect the quote that you receive and it is possible to change certain things in order to get a better quote.

How is it Possible to get the Best Motor Insurance Quotes?

In order to get the best motor insurance quotes you have to understand exactly what it is that affects your insurance. Generally the following factors make a difference to the quote that you will receive:

• Gender
• Age
• Mileage
• Make and Model of Vehicle
• Safety

Now obviously some things mentioned above you cannot change. Your age will make a difference because the younger the driver, the less experience they will have and so the insurance will reflect this. However there are things that you can do to lower your insurance quote.

Insurance brokers like drivers who keep themselves and their car as safe as possible. So if you keep your car in a garage that is likely to lower your insurance quote. Keeping it in the garage will protect it from the weather which will prevent issues such as rust. It will also help to ensure that the car is harder to steal which means that you are less likely to claim on your insurance for theft. Other safety devices such as an alarm fitted in the car and a wheel lock may also help you to get the best motor insurance quotes too.

Another factor that will affect your quote is the make and model of your vehicle. Sportier cars generally cost more on insurance, as do classic cars. So if you have not yet chosen which vehicle you would like to own, it would be a good idea to research the typical insurance costs for that vehicle before you purchase it. You could save a lot of money just by looking at different, more insurance friendly cars.

The amount of miles that you do on average each year will affect how high your quote is. The fewer miles you drive, the lower your quote will be. Obviously the less you drive, the lower the chance of you getting into a car accident. Your insurance will reflect this and so if you could cut down your mileage your quote can be lowered.

What gender you are will also affect your insurance. On average female drivers get lower insurance quotes because they are seen to be safer drivers. Statistically men get into more motor accidents than women and so their insurance quotes are usually higher to reflect this. Of course there are specialist companies who cater only to females and those are the ones you should apply to if you are a female driver.

Overall using a specialist insurance broker may help you to receive the best insurance quote possible as they do all of the work for you. No matter whom you are or what your circumstances, the broker will be able to find the best insurance to suit your needs. So if you are looking to get the best motor insurance quotes then using an insurance broker may be a good option.

Motor Insurance Claim
Australia Motor Insurance — first time?

I’m buying a new car and am looking for insurance cover. I’ve gone to many company sites and most don’t ask my speed/ticket history, just accidents. Will I need to send them any sort of driving history report after I buy or will they get that on their own? I’ve heard companies have refused claims in the past because people have not told them about their driving history and want to make sure I have cover just in case! Thanks!!

when you take out an insurance policy, you normally need to either talk to someone or fill out a proposal form.

usually, this WILL ask for any traffic offences as well as any car accidents you’ve been in. essentially, the insurance company is trying to get a picture of the type of driver you are. ie, are you a risk taker, by speeding and ignoring the law?

not all companies ask for formal driving infringement history (say if you have had only one or two tickets) BUT they are within their rights to ask for it before they accept cover.

i don’t believe an insurance company has any rights to contact the police department and ask for your driving history, however, then can request that YOU obtain this from the police and show them a copy before they will cover you.

yes, an insurance company CAN refuse to pay a claim if you have knowingly withheld your driving history from them. at the time of taking out cover, you are advised that the company can refuse a claim or cancel your policy if you aren’t honest in what you tell them. it’s not often that this happens, but it does happen.

Short Motor Insurance

If you want to drive legally in the UK then you have to have insurance if you wish to drive on the road. And while this can be expensive depending on your circumstances it is a legal requirement. Therefore, if you are financially savvy, you have to do all you can to ensure that you have covered your car with the cheapest motor insurance around.

The cheapest motor insurance can be found by going online with a specialist car broker website, which in a very short time can get you quotes for the cover which is much cheaper than you would probably be able to find for yourself. However before you can get your quotes you first have to decide which type of insurance you want – there are three main types when it comes to insuring your car: third party only; third party fire and theft; and fully comprehensive.

Fully comprehensive is the dearest of all the cover but is essential if you have a new car or if your car is over a certain value, typically £4,000-5,000. Fully comprehensive gives you cover against such as fire and theft of your car and also for others to claim against you if you should be in an accident. It also covers you for loss of personal belongings and medical expenses if you should get hurt in an accident but policies do differ and you should always check the wording in the small print to determine what the actual policy covers.

Third party fire and theft will insure your car against being stolen and suffering damage due to fire, it will also protect you against others that claim against you if you should get into an accident. Third party only will allow others to claim against your insurance if you should get into an accident and is the cheapest form of insurance available. However, any damage caused by you to your car will not be covered, so if you will have to fund any repairs to your vehicle yourself.

Online Motor Insurance

You are able to get some great motor insurance deals if you go online and allow a specialist broker to find deals for you to compare. A broker will have access to some of the top lenders in the UK and can deliver them to you quickly along with the key facts needed for you to be able to make a comparison.

All motor insurance deals vary, insurance companies will add in different things to entice you to go with them for the insurance. Therefore it pays to not only compare the cost of the premiums but also what the policy entails and what is and is not covered. Of course this is usually when you choose to take out a fully comprehensive policy. A fully comprehensive policy will cover a wider range of eventualities than third party fire and theft or third party only does. So the number one way to save money and get the best car insurance deals is to check cost and content.

A fully comprehensive car insurance policy will cover the policy holder and the third party. It would pay out for any repairs that needed to be done to the cars and you would also be covered for medical and legal costs in case you needed it. The best fully comprehensive policies will provide you with a courtesy car if your car is off the road and it could provide very basic levels of breakdown assistance if you look around. If breakdown assistance is not included then some insurance companies will give you the opportunity to be able to add it in for a very small sum. Of course you would also have all the cover that third party fire and theft includes such as insurance against fire and theft. Comparing with several car insurance companies is essential when thinking of taking out fully comp. This level of insurance is needed if you buy a brand new car or if you buy a car over a certain amount.

Fully comprehensive is the most complete form of insurance but it might be out of reach for younger drivers. Younger drivers get penalised due to their inexperience on the roads. While there is nothing they can do when it comes to a lack of experience, they can do things to keep down the cost of insurance. The choice of car is one way to make savings, choosing a car of moderate size with a reasonable engine size will go a long way to keeping down the insurance premiums. While a sports model might do a lot for the image it will break the bank with the cost to put the car on the road. Younger drivers can take advanced driving lessons and they could also consider taking out third party fire and theft for their car.

Third party fire and theft motor insurance deals will not provide as much cover for the policy holder’s car but it will cover the cost of repairs and medical costs to the third party. It would also pay the policy holder if their car should be destroyed or damaged in a fire and if the car should be stolen. Third party fire and theft policies can be very reasonable in cost for the younger driver who has bought their car second hand for low cost. You could also consider a third party only policy, this policy would provide cover for the third party only but would not provide any benefit at all to the policy holder.

Motor Insurance Policy

Motorist are being urged to regularly check what their insurance policy offers so they can take advantage of all the benefits on offer and do not end up spending more than they should be.

Fully comprehensive policies offer a number of additional benefits on top of the things it already covers. Not only does this policy offer all the opportunities of third party and third party, fire and theft cover, as well as protection against loss or damage to the vehicle caused by someone else and cover for personal belongings that are stolen or damaged whilst locked in your car, it offers additional benefits too.

However, some benefits come at an added cost including adding a named driver to the policy and open driving which allows anyone to be insured when driving the vehicle with the prior consent of the policyholder.

No claims discount protection against fire and theft or for all claims can also be added, but people may choose to opt for the ‘step-back’ bonus protection scheme instead. This means that if a driver makes a claim for loss or damage of the vehicle, they will only lose a part of the discount, for example 20 per cent, instead of the full amount.

It is also necessary that motorists consider the excess and is a clause included in most motor insurance policies. This means the policyholder has to pay the first portion of any loss or damage, which is usually up to a few hundred euros.

Policyholders are unable to claim for amounts less than the excess. The higher the excess, the lower the insurance premium should be, so it is important motorists decide which is more important to them.

Other tips to remember are whether you have a full or provisional licence; it will affect the cost of premiums, as will age and gender. The number of years you have been driving and any motoring convictions or penalty points are also taken into account and will increase the cost.

Another thing to remember, is if you are switching your policy to a new insurer, make sure you can transfer your no claims discount with you so you are not starting again from scratch.

If you possess a full five year no claims discount, it can help to cut your premium by as much as 50 per cent.
